Ultra Capacitor Car

  1. Build car
  2. get materials ( tape measure, fishing line, car, D battery, stop watch, Ipad, rubber band, wires, chairs)
  3. find a suitable area to test the car
  4. build a track
  5. place car on fishing line
  6. charge car for 5 sec.
  7. release wire
  8. measure distance of the car travel
  9. record distance and time data on ipad
  10. re- do step 6-9 again at 5 sec intervals

question

I have a question does the rocket car need water to work or can we put gel in it and still work?

Today

Today we tested the salt water car. We didn't get it to work

Salt water car

Today we are trying the salt water car and it is not working. We have added a lot of salt to our water and it doesn't work.

solar

We found out that we need a 100 watt halogen light not a 100 watt light bulb.

what I did today

I took data for the capacitor car.  We made the track for the capacitor car. I swabbed the up stairs key board.

Today

Today we tested our ultra capacitor car. Over all the tests went really well. This was a very productive class today

building a track

Today we have figured out that we need to build a track of each of our cars.

What should we make each track out of?

Ultra capacitor car problems

There was some human error while building this car:

The human error was that in the beginning we built it wrong.

Salt water car problems

As we observed the salt water car we noticed that the back wheels don't stay attached to the car and are uneven.

How does the rocket race car works (Procedure)

How it works:
As you pump air into the bottle, pressure inside the bottle gets higher and higher. The pressure pushed on the inside of the bung and eventually gets high enough to push the bung out of the bottle's neck. Then the air pressure pushes water out of the bottle at high speed. Because the bottle pushes one way, and the water pushes the bottle the other way( this is a action reaction).

How do operate it:
1.) fit the needle valve into a foot pump or bicycle pump.
2.) Half fill the plastic bottle with water from tap.
3.) Push the bung into the neck of the bottle.
4.) Place the rocket race car on the ground outdoors, where it will have space to zoom forwards. Launch on a smooth outdoor surface.
5.) Start pumping air into the bottle. The air pressure in the bottle will rise until the pressure will push the cork out, a jet of water will shoot from the bottle.

Procedure for Rocket Race Car

1.) Slot an axle support under the chassis. Push two bolts through the holes in the chassis and the axle support and secure with nuts under the chassis support.
2.) Fix the second axle support as in step one.
3.) Take one of the axles. Push it through the axle support, and then through a second rivet. Push a wheel onto the end of the axle.
4.) Fix the second axle in step three.
5.) Push the end of a strap through one set of slots under the chassis.
6.) Fix the end of the second strap through the other slots.
7.) Rest the plastic bottle on the chassis with its neck poking through the plastic ring then the loop on the chassis. Screw the screw cap onto the neck of the bottle.
8.) Bring the end of a strap round to fasten it into the loop on the other end of a strap on top of the bottle.
9.) Fix the second strap as in step eight.
10.) Push the needle valve into the whole of the bung.

researched questions- Amy

How does a solar powered car work?
A solar powered  car gets it's  energy from sunlight. Solar panels are black, black absorbs sunlight well.  As the solar panels absorbs the sunlight a part of the solar panel called a solar cell coverts the light into electricity to power the car. The electricity that is not used is stored for a cloudy day.

How does a salt water powered car work?

How does a salt water powered work?
saltwater slowly dissolves a magnesium sheet which produces hydrogen ions that migrate to the carbon cathode, creating a electrical current.

What is energy?
Is the ability to do work- we learned this in class

Which car is the cheapest to operate?

They will all cost the same.

Where will we test the car?

I think that it will be the gym because it is an open area and the surface is flat.

What type of light should we use to power the solar car?

I think that we should you sun light because it is the strongest light we can get.

Comment if you like or what to add something.

OWI Solar Race Car

This car can be found on Amazon for around $10, its easy to assemble and seems very reliable. What do you guys think?

I also found this one

It can be found on the New Mexico Solar Energy Website for around $25
